Win the Game of Life: Sell What The People Want To Buy

Today’s blog, #2 of my daily blogging 2018 challenge, was supposed to be about how I’ve started a new habit of waking up at 5am, and drinking 100 ounces of water a day. While I promise to circle back to that topic tomorrow (or later this week), what I’d like to talk about today is a thought that’s been bouncing around in my head lately.

“All else aside, sell what the people want to buy.”

No, I didn’t get that from a fortune cookie, but I did think it had a nice ring to it. 🙂

I think we’ve all heard a saying similar, and I’ve always known that to sell a prospect, they have to be a buyer. You can’t turn someone who’ll never buy into someone who will.

But you’re the one with the responsibility to choose what and how to sell the world what you have.

The truth is, no matter what you believe religiously, the universe is large, scary, exciting, dark, LIGHT, and…just…a lot. And sometimes it’s difficult to decide what to do, how to do it, or even why to do it in the first place.

But one thing is universal: Sales.

Everything is sales. When you call your boss to ask for time off, you’re selling him; if you’re a waiter, when you ask a patron if they’d like to try a wine, your job is to sell them wine. But it goes beyond business.

If you’re a child, and you want to stay up a little bit later, you have to sell your mom on the idea.
If you’re an adult, maybe you have to sell your friend the idea of indoor mountain biking, and then he comes and breaks his finger. (Sorry, this just happened to me. #triggered)

The Easiest Sale Of Your Lifetime

To get what we want, we have to convince someone else to give it to us.

The problem is, that sounds like a bad thing. Manipulative. Shady. Slimy. And unfortunately, once ill-intentioned individuals realize that sales rules all, they can use that knowledge to manipulate others. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be a damn good salesperson without being a jackass.

The key is selling the right product to the right person. Hell, if you give $1 to a Mcdonalds employee, you’ll get an ice cream cone. You sold them a dollar for ice cream, and they sold you ice cream for a dollar. You see? Sales, not just on their end. Both sides of the coin.

Every step in-between is just a chess move to get there. Just like Chess. And Checkers. And Quidditch. And every other game you’ve ever played before (or wished you could in the case of Quidditch.)

Do you think that’s an accident? Of course not. So how do we use this knowledge to win the game?

Do you want to know the easiest sale you’ll ever make?

The one where you sell a perfect product to the perfect person for all the right reasons.

So how do you achieve this? It’s simple. Sell what the people want to buy.

If you love to play guitar, write songs so good, you can’t be ignored. How? Don’t stop until you create a song that sells a million albums and reaches the Top 40.

If you love video games, become the best Halo 5 Sniper the world has ever seen and you’ll be a pro. How? Don’t stop practicing until you make it happen.

If you love your wife, become the best husband she could ever have and she will return the favor. How? Don’t stop learning until you finally realize she’s always right. Just kidding on the last one, but you get the point. 😉

I definitely could’ve worded that more eloquently, but hey, I’m writing a blog every single day, so cut me some slack! Jeez.

But it’s a bulletproof system. Let’s quickly break down each of the five steps.

1- You

Self Explanatory. You right now. Right this moment. The current version of you.

2- What Do You Have To Offer?

Everyone is naturally gifted at something. What’s your gift? If you’re like me, you have a lot of passions, and picking just one may be tough. But that’s the best part: You can pick more than one.

Stop right now and write down three things you think you’re naturally gifted or talented at, or that you picked up easily once you started, and truly enjoy doing. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Seriously. Take one minute and do it. Open a note on your phone, I’m waiting.

Back? Great. Now, whatever you wrote down, let’s say it was playing guitar; who makes money playing guitar? Who does with a guitar what you wish you could? Who plays like you?

If you’re naturally gifted with makeup, like my wife Gaby is, who uses makeup how you do? Who has your style? Do you want to be on YouTube? Have a line of brushes in stores? If you’re like her, you want it all, and you’ve spent years honing your craft to become the best of the best.

Who can you emulate? Write their names down.

3- Find the People That Want it

Now that you know who your inspiration is, who are their customers?

Are they stay at home moms with three or more kids? Perfect.

Are they millennials with a distaste for small government? Good luck haha.

The point is, everyone’s customer is someone, and most customers are similar someones.

So who are they? Got it? Great. Don’t forget. Better yet, write it down in that handy dandy notebook. 🙂

4- Give It To Them

Now you know who you are and what you have to offer.

You also know who’s been where you want to go, and who is standing in line to buy their talents.

Now it’s time to put it all together. But how? Again, become the best version of yourself. If playing the piano makes you feel better than you ever have before, then play a shit ton of piano until you are incredible, impossible to ignore, and eventually, a successful pianist.

5 – You + Success

The people who sit in the seat you want, got there by being incredible at something. Anything. It doesn’t matter what it is, you just have to be world class at it.

You can’t expect to live an exceptional life if you are not exceptional.

And the best part is, we are all exceptional. That’s why we’re here.
